Kershaw County youth hunter kills first gobbler

Youth hunter Knox Shelton killed his first gobbler on March 31, 2024.

Youth hunter Knox Shelton was hunting in Kershaw County, SC on March 31 when he killed his first turkey. It was his first ever turkey hunt, and it was the first time he ever shot his .410 single shot during a hunt.

The bird came in at 15 yards, responding to a Reaper turkey call during the hunt, which took place around 7 a.m. on private land. The gobbler had a 10.5-inch beard and weighed 19.4 pounds.

Entering his turkey in the Get A Gobbler Contest gives Shelton a shot at winning a Yeti Loadout 5-gallon bucket with lid and caddy, a Tactacam Reveal X Pro cellular trail camera with 32GB SD card, and a Spyderco lockblade folding knife.

Youth hunter bags 22-pound, double-bearded gobbler

Double-birded gobbler was the young hunter’s first turkey.

Tenley Schutte killed a double-bearded, 22-pound gobbler on March 16, 2024, which was Youth Day in South Carolina. She shot the turkey on private land in Horry County at about 7:45 a.m.

This was the young hunter’s first turkey, and she shot it with a 20-gauge.

The big bird gobbled at first light, responding to some crows fighting.

“Two yelps and 10 minutes later, the turkey gave her a 20-yard shot,” said Jon Schutte.

Entering her turkey in the Get A Gobbler Contest gives Tenley a shot at winning a Yeti Loadout 5-gallon bucket with lid and caddy, a Tactacam Reveal X Pro cellular trail camera with 32GB SD card, and a Spyderco lockblade folding knife.

Wheelchair-bound youth hunter kills big gobbler

Recent surgery didn’t stop this young hunter from bagging a nice bird. Congratulations Bryce Wilson!

Bryce Wilson got on board the Get A Gobbler Contest with a longbeard he killed in Williamsburg County, SC on March 24, 2024. Bryce was hunting from a blind with his dad, Chris Wilson, when the bird showed up.

The bird, which weighed 18 pounds, had a 10 3/4-inch beard and sported 1-inch spurs. Bryce shot it with a TriStar Viper .410 shotgun.

The elder Wilson said the hunt was a great experience for his son, who has been in a wheelchair since early November.

“Bryce had major leg surgery back on Nov. 7, and he has been in a wheelchair ever since. He was born with Spina Bifida,” said Wilson.

They were hunting on private land, and used a ceramic pot call, which the bird came to without warning.

“We got in the blind that morning, and no birds were gobbling. This bird came strutting in out of nowhere,” Wilson said.

But the turkey didn’t make things easy on Bryce.

“The bird was on my side of the blind. I had to pick up Bryce inside the blind, put him in my lap, and get the gun out the window. The good Lord blessed us, and Bryce sealed the deal at 30 yards,” said Chris.

Entering his turkey in the Get A Gobbler Contest gives Bryce a shot at winning a Yeti Loadout 5-gallon bucket with lid and caddy, a Tactacam Reveal X Pro cellular trail camera with 32GB SD card, and a Spyderco lockblade folding knife.
